The Helena College Veterans’ Club held a fundraiser on April 7, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Jessi Beeman whose two-year-old daughter, Lila, had cancer. The event held in the student center was a combination bake sale and raffle, with nine possible prizes. The Veterans’ Club raised $302.31 to help the family through this event.

Prizes were donated by family, friends, and a few local businesses including Free Ceramics, photographer Gary Marshall and the White Knight Games and Hobbies. A special donation of a beautiful cutting board was made by Helena College’s own Matt Schmidt.

A bright note to this story is that on May 5, 2017  Lila Tremblay underwent surgery to remove her cancerous desmoid tumor and is now according to her mom, Jessi Beeman, cancer free.

The First Annual Helena College Day, which took place on April 21, 2017, at the Lewis and Clark  County Fairgrounds, was designed to bring students from the local high schools and others in the area to consider becoming students.
Every office has a booth that can provide information to interested people and hopefully bring in more students. Booths are also given to student organizations such as the Student Government Association who had a popcorn machine, Trio S2S Club who created a photo booth to win a $100 gift card, and Computer Technology Club, which featured Walter the Robot that worked off of a basic form of echolocation.
Other booths featured the professors from the programs of study and examples of what they have done in their classes and student projects. The Social/Psychology booth featured an experiment that compared pain tolerance between men and women and how it related to self-medicating with alcohol along with many other student projects.
Several high school students were interested in becoming dual enrollment students and some knew what they wanted to get a degree in while others didn’t. It is hard to know what a person wants as a career and it will change as they continue their educational careers.
Helena College Day is a great opportunity to see what Helena College is all about, discuss what programs are available for students, and talk with professors and other faculty to help with the decision of one’s future.
